BEVERLY, Mass. – Members of the Endicott men’s basketball team made a big difference in the lives of young Beverly students when they teamed up with North Beverly Elementary School to serve as guest readers earlier this month.
Mike Sallese, Lance Greene, Lachlane Magee, Kyle Connor, John Henault, Andre Makris, Matt Kneece, Eric Callo and Tanner McEntee travelled to North Beverly Elementary School for the day and read out loud to classes of first through fifth graders. The players broke up into pairs, with each tandem of Gulls reading to at least three classes.
According to assistant coach Seth Stantial, who organized the event with a teacher at the school who had proposed the idea, the goal was to stress to the kids the importance of school and of reading.
Junior point guard Lance Greene (Dorchester, Mass.) echoed Stantial’s sentiments, adding that each EC student at the event stressed not only the importance of reading, but how fun it could be. “We simply wanted the children to be inspired and to enjoy reading more books,” said Greene.
The Gulls ended up having a lot of fun themselves at the event while reading to the students and talking to them about their backgrounds. “It felt very rewarding knowing that these kids actually looked up to us and admired who we were,” said Greene. “The fact that we may have had a huge impact in the children’s lives by simply coming and reading to them brings such a good feeling to all of us.”
“I thought it was an awesome experience for the both the players and the students,” said Stantial, in his first season as collegiate coach, now back in his home town of Beverly. “The most rewarding part of the experience was seeing the thank you cards from the students.”
The Gulls are back in action tonight when they play for first place in the Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC). To nab the top spot, they must beat visiting Salve Regina in a game set for 8:00 pm.
