Men?s Volleyball Grows Staches for Cancer Research
December 1, 2011
BEVERLY, Mass. – Members of the Endicott men’s volleyball team recently participated in the annual “Movember,” fundraiser, and together raised \$1,415.00 for cancer research simply by not shaving.
Movember is an international movement that raises money for cancer research and awareness through men growing mustaches for the month of November. Participants set up an account and update it with pictures of their mustaches throughout the course of a month, and people pledge money to the cause.
Carter Roche, Kevin Duggan, Mike Coniglione, Aaron Jessee, Josh Anderson, Brandon Chadwick, Travis Netherton, Matt Devendorf, Brennan Lowe, Joshua Bruno, Stew Allendorph, and Jeremy Siden all went without trimming their upper lip in November. They also worked to spread the word of cancer awareness to friends and family both on campus and while home for Thanksgiving break.
According to Endicott assistant coach George Chapell, many team members were originally hesitant when the idea of Movember was originally brought up, but the Gulls realized that they had an opportunity to help so many people by doing something so simple as not shaving. After the end of the month, members of the team were proud of their accomplishments and appreciated that you should seize every opportunity to put others ahead of yourself .
“The most rewarding part was knowing how much you had helped such an important cause,” said Chapell, who is starting his fourth year as an Endicott assistant coach. “Almost everyone has someone in their lives that has been affected by cancer one way or another, and to know that you have helped and made them proud is extremely gratifying.”
The Gulls men’s volleyball season will begin on January 24th when Endicott takes to their home court against Harvard at 7:00 pm.
