BEVERLY, Mass. – The Endicott softball team took a break from their CCC schedule to take on NEWMAC opponent Babson on Tuesday afternoon for a pair of games at the Gulls Softball Complex. The Blue and Green dropped both games as Babson put on a powerful hitting display, stroking four homeruns on the day to improve to 22-9 on the year.
Outmatched in game one, Endicott (11-15) rallied in game two to tie up at two runs apiece heading into the late innings but the Beavers used a solo homerun by outfielder Maya Lacy (East Mill Creek, Utah) to go on top 3-2 in what proved to be the game-winning hit.
The Gulls return to the league schedule on Wednesday afternoon for a road doubleheader against Nichols starting at 3:00 pm. Babson revisits a game that originated on March 9th against Wellesley, picking up where the two teams left off in the fifth inning tomorrow afternoon.
Game One: Endicott 2, Babson 11 (5 inn.)
Babson third baseman Christa Shorette (Southington, Conn.) went 3-for-3 with five RBI and six other Beaver batters recorded a RBI in an 11-2 rout in game one over Endicott.
Shorette recorded RBI doubles in the second and third innings before her two-run blast in a four-run top of the fourth helped put Babson on top 10-1 at that point in the game. Beavers senior Catie Funk (Scarborough, Maine) and freshman Caitie Benoit (Williamstown, Mass.) led off the top of the third with back-to-back solo homeruns as the visitors totaled three round-trippers in game one.
On the mound for Babson, senior Megan Brain (Pompton Plains, N.J.) earned the win (2-4) by going 2 1/3 innings, allowing one earned run on three hits and two walks with one strikeout. Sophomore Meghan Hayes (Robbinsville, N.J.) finished the final 2 2/3 innings in relief, allowing Endicott's second run on two hits, two walks, with a strikeout.
The Gulls got a RBI, ground-rule double to left center from freshman Jamie Corda (Higganum, Conn.) who drove home junior Alexandra Moise (North Reading, Mass.), who had doubled to lead off the bottom of the third. Two innings and facing an 11-1 deficit, Gulls freshman Julia Marra (Litchfield, N.H.) singled up the middle to lead off the bottom of the fifth and was pushed up to second on a walk by sophomore Sam Cila (Wakefield, Mass.). After a pop out to short, freshman Emily Hoffman (Malden, Mass.) drove a single to right to plate Marra to make it 11-2.
Game Two: Endicott 2, Babson 6
Babson used RBI doubles by freshman Emily Morris (Wolcott, Conn.) in the top of the first and Lacy in the top of the fourth to take a 2-0 lead, but Endicott plated two runners in the bottom of the fifth the tie the game as a senior first baseman Krista Fales (Melrose, Mass.) roped a double to left to score Jesse Bilafer (Concord, Mass.) and Moise.
In the circle, Gulls freshman Katherine Clark (Taunton, Mass.) had gone five innings, allowing just two runs on six hits but the Beavers delivered a go-ahead solo homerun in the top of the sixth by Lacy to take the 3-2 lead. Babson added three more runs in the top of the seventh on RBI singles by Morris and sophomore Nicole Ravetier (Cranford, N.J.) and a sacrifice fly by Shorette to pull away 6-2.
On the mound for Babson, junior pitcher Kathleen Conway (Simsbury, Conn.) came on in relief of Tess Rubega (Norwich, Conn.) to throw three innings of one-run ball with four strikeouts to improve to 13-4 on the season. Rubego went four innings, allowing one earned run on four hits and two walks with two strikeouts in the no-decision.
Funk finished the game 3-for-3 with two runs scored while both Morris and Lacy had two RBIs in the win. Gulls junior Kelley Michael (Ipswich, Mass.) had two hits in the loss.
