George Reaches 1,000-Point Club
Jan. 18, 2006
BEVERLY, MA - Senior co-captain Matt George (Dover, NH/Dover) became the seventh player in Endicott College men's basketball history to enter the 1,000-point club.
George entered Tuesday night's contest at the University of New England four points away from the elusive plateau. He was held scoreless in the first half but netted six points in the final 20 minutes of a 60-42 Gulls' victory to eclipse the 1,000-point mark.
"This is a great honor for Matt," said Endicott coach Chris Millette. "It shows a high-level of consistent performance, which is tough to do at this level.
"I think the team and the coaches were more into it that Matt was last night. He was more worried about winning the game."
George is the third player in as many years to crack the 1,000-point mark, joining Josh Oxton (2001-2005) and Jeremy Currier (2000-2004). Other EC players in the 1,000-point club are Jon D'Orlando (1994-1998), Eric Simonelli (1998-2001), Andy Kirk (1998-2002), and Jason Diaz (1998-2002).
Women's basketball players Melissa Tarpy (1994-1998), Heidi Stevens (1996-2000) and Sarah Dunfey (1997-2001) are also in the 1,000-point club.
George has done just that over the course of his four years at the college. Endicott is 71-26, including an impressive 47-5 in the Commonwealth Coast Conference. The Gulls have won back-to-back CCC Championships and are 4-0 in the conference this season (7-5 overall).
George is averaging 12.4 points and 3.25 assists in 12 contests this season. He also averages 1.8 steals and 1.1 blocks per game. In 2004-2005, George averaged 13.5 points per game, making the CCC First Team. He ranked in the top 35 in the nation (Division III) in field goal percentage, three-point field goal percentage and steals.
Endicott returns to action Thursday night in Boston when it takes on Wentworth Institute of Technology (7:30).
