2010 Recap and 2010/11 Outlook
Tenacity, patience, and a positive outlook were the requirements for any member of the 2010 Sailing Team. Coming in to the fall with strong numbers, the team kicked off the season with a “Welcome” cookout and rigging day at the boathouse under a bright blue sky and perfect weather. However, as in most coastal communities this past fall the sailing team suffered some losses in equipment from a surprise storm that damaged several 420’s and two Larks during a fast moving overnight surge. Despite the efforts to protect the boats against the oncoming weather, the team was disappointed to find the docks broken and boats missing. While each boat was recovered, practices quickly shifted to using the college’s Rhodes 19’s for regatta preparations and then enter New England Collegiate Sailing Association races with the larger boats. Coach and volunteers spent the January break fixing and patching several 420’s and Larks, introducing new team members to the art of sailing in the spring and used the momentum to end the season with an even larger team! This fall’s “forecast” is promising with fair skies, new freshmen/women to take to the waters, and a completely trained group of returning sophomores. Combined with the returning seniors that spent last semester abroad, high hopes remain for the EC Sailing Team in 2010-11.
