CENTERVILLE, Mass. – The Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) issued their 2011 Division III North Football All-Stars and Endicott seniors Phil Konopka (Shelton, Conn.) and Kevin Eagan (West Hartford, Conn.) were named this year’s Offensive and Defensive Players of the Year.
Konopka and Eagan led a group of five Gulls gridiron stars that represented Endicott on the ECAC DIII North All-Star list. Sophomores Jason Silva (Maynard, Mass.) and Dylan Rushe (Palos Verdes, Calif.) joined the two Players of the Year on the First Team while senior running back Mike Lane (Medfield, Mass.) earned a Second Team nod.
Konopka earns ECAC DIII North Offensive Player of the Year after a record-breaking season for the 9-1 Gulls. The senior quarterback set Endicott program marks of 2,450 passing yards, 25 touchdown passes, 240.5 passing yards per game and an accurate 66.2 completion percentage to highlight the season. His five touchdown performance against Curry College and 407 yards passing against Western New England University showcased his playmaking ability.
Eagan was selected as the ECAC DIII North Defensive Player of the Year for the second straight season after a strong year on the defensive line for Endicott. The senior led all Gulls players with 104 tackles on the season including 59 solo take downs, and was ranked 10th nationally in tackles for losses while averaging 2.09 a game for a total of 23.0 on the season. He also showed his game changing ability by collecting three interceptions, three forced fumbles and three fumble recoveries.
Rushe, the nation’s second-ranked kicker with an average of 1.55 field goals per game, recorded 51 points on a record-breaking 17 field goals and 51 extra points. Rushe nailed a 55-yard field goal against Curry to tie an all-time New England record.
Silva, a defensive back in his second year with the Gulls, led the team with six interceptions and six pass breakups. He ranked second in the NEFC and tied for 26th in the NCAA in that category.
Lane capped off his career with 1,517 yards on the ground with 14 total touchdowns, both career highs. Lane finishes his four years as Endicott’s all-time rushing leader with 4,337 yards (4.96 yards per carry).
