Conference Champion Gulls Earn Player of the Week Accolades
November 8, 2011
SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – Two of the newly crowned Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) field hockey champion Endicott Gulls have been named the final CCC players of the week for the 2011 season. Junior goalkeeper Taylor Teixeira (Exeter, N.H.) has been named the Defensive Player of the Week, while her classmate Taylor Matties (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.) has been named the Offensive Player of the Week.
Matties and Teixeira each had big parts to play in the Gull’s 2-0 week, which of course featured their 2-0 victory over Gordon in the semifinals of the CCC tournament and their thrilling 2-1 overtime victory over University of New England to clinch their first conference title.
Taylor Matties blasted a game-winning goal, her third of the year, with just 56 seconds into overtime on Saturday to deliver the thrilling victory against University of New England and the Gulls’ first CCC Field Hockey Championship in program history. Matties also assisted on the opening goal of the game, a strike that tied the game at one. Matties now has 13 assists on the year to lead the team and her assists per game average of .65 ties her for eleventh in the country.
Endicott College junior goalkeeper Taylor Teixeira was lights out in the CCC tournament, allowing just one goal to post a goals against average of 0.50 in over 140 minutes of play, including a semifinal shutout victory over Gordon, her fifth of the season. She also turned away eight shots on goal and made one defensive save on the week. Teixeira’s clutch goaltending is a large part of the reason that the Gulls are making their first NCAA tournament appearance in school history.
Both Matties and Teixeira were named to the CCC All-Conference First Team before the conference tournament started, with Teixeira being tabbed as Defensive Player of the Year. This is the fourth time this season that Teixeira has been named Defensive Player of the Week, while Matties earns her first weekly conference honor.
The Gulls will begin their NCAA tournament run on Wednesday afternoon when they travel to Keene State for a 4:00 pm game. Live video is available for that game here.
