KISSIMMEE, Fla. – The Endicott softball team kicks off their 2013 season down in Kissimee, Florida at the Rebel Spring Games as the Gulls are taking on a strong crop of regional and out-of-region opponents.
On day two, Endicott remained winless after suffering morning losses to Augsburg and Anderson (Ind.) to fall to 0-4 overall. The Gulls return to the field tomorrow morning with a pair of games against Springfield and Utica at 9:00 am and 11:00 am.
Game One: Endicott 3, Augsburg 7
Senior outfielder Byrne Katz (Trumbull, Conn.) cracked a two-run homerun in the top of the seventh, but her late-game hit came with Endicott already trailing 7-1 as the Gulls took an early morning loss to Augsburg.
Endicott took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning after junior Jesse Bilafer (Concord, Mass.) singled, stole second, and advanced two more bases on throwing errors by the Augsburg defense to cross home plate. Gulls sophomore pitcher Meg Donegan (Atkinson, N.H.) went two scoreless innings before the Auggies put up a seven-run bottom of the third to take a commanding lead in the game.
Augsburg's rally was capped off by a three-run bomb by Lauren Hurley (Arden Hills, Minn.). Endicott junior Nell O'Connor (Harwich, Mass.) came on in relief to stop the bleeding, hurling 3 2/3 scoreless innings allowing just two hits and two walks with two strikeouts.
Amanda Eaton (White Bear Lake, Minn.) went the distance for Augsburg, striking out eight batters in seven innings.
Game Two: Endicott 4, Anderson (Ind.) 13 (5 inn.)
In their second meeting with Anderson in as many days, Endicott went into the top of the fifth tied 4-4 with the Ravens. Anderson scored nine runs on eight hits and one error in the top half of the fifth as Amy Wuestefeld (Batesville, Ind.), Sami Frazier (Greenfield, Ind.), Tori Price (Noblesville, Ind.), and Lys Hess (Auburn, Ind.) all recorded multiple RBIs in the game.
Anderson started off the game with a 4-0 lead in the top of the first, but Endicott responded with four runs of their own in the bottom half as senior Colleen Martin (Cape Elizabeth, Maine) hit a two-run homer and two more runs scored on a passed ball and a RBI single by Alexandra Moise (North Reading, Mass.).
After her first inning struggles, freshman Courtney Blake (East Islip, N.Y.) pitched three scoreless frames before giving way to relief pitchers.
