Kissimmee, Fla. – The Endicott softball team kicks off their 2013 season down in Kissimmee, Florida at the Rebel Spring Games as the Gulls are taking on a strong crop of regional and out-of-region opponents.
Day five of competition saw the Gulls drop their two final games to Springfield and Otterbein. Endicott returns home and will face off against Tufts on Tuesday, March 26th in a home doubleheader starting at 3:00 pm.
Game One: Endicott 3, Springfield 7
The Endicott offensive remained quiet until the bottom of the sixth inning when the Gulls scored three runs to pull within one of Springfield at 4-3. Endicott quickly recorded two outs, but three errors by the Pride kept the inning alive and junior Kelley Michael (Ipswich, Mass.) did her part in the batter's box with a RBI double that scored Alexandra Moise (North Reading, Mass.).
Endicott needed to keep Springfield off the scoreboard in the top of the seventh to have a chance to tie in the bottom half of the inning, but the Pride responded with three runs of their own as they shut down the Blue and Green by a score of 7-3.
Springfield pitcher Ashley Marino (Harrison, N.Y.) struck out eight batters as she earned her first victory of the season. Offensively for Springfield, Breann Joyce (Trumbull, Conn.) recorded three RBI and crossed the plate one time on a two-run homerun in the top of the first.
Game Two: Endicott 2, Otterbein 4
Otterbein used a trio of pitchers who allowed just three hits and one walk while striking out four Endicott batters in a 4-2 Gulls loss. Otterbein scored twice in the bottom of the first and two more times two innings later before Endicott was able to get on the board in back-to-back innings in the fourth and fifth frames.
Otterbein third baseman Brook Albright (Pemberville, Ohio) went 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored while Bryn Allen (Westerville, Ohio) scored twice to lead the Cardinals.
Endicott junior hurler Nell O'Connor came on in relief in the bottom of the fourth inning and pitched three scoreless frames allowing just one hit while striking out three. O'Connor finished the week with a staff-low 4.81 earned run average with seven strikeouts in 16 innings pitched.
Offensively, Krista Fales (Melrose, Mass.) hit .345 with four RBI and three runs in 29 at bats. Byrne Katz (Trumbull, Conn.) also recorded a team-high four RBI. Jesse Bilafer (Concord, Mass.) was a perfect 3-for-3 on stolen base attempts.
