Gulls Edge Brandeis to Sweep Non-Conference Set, Win Eighth Straight

BEVERLY, Mass. – Endicott got a run in the bottom of the eighth inning and a brilliant combined performance from six different pitchers to beat visiting Brandeis University 2-1 and extend their winning streak to 8 straight games. The Gulls finish off a stretch of three straight non-conference games and improve their overall record to 19-13.

Third baseman Danny Mello (Peabody, Mass.), who had two hits in the game, singled to lead off the eighth and came across the plate on an RBI sacrifice to left by shortstop E.J. Martinez (Brooklyn, N.Y.).

That would prove to be enough for the Gulls and closer John Morrison (Ridgefield, Conn.), who pitched the final two outs of the ninth to collect his fifth save of the season and earn the win for Connor McLaughlin (Clinton, Mass.), who pitched an inning and two-thirds and improves to 4-0.

Each team managed just one hit through the first four innings, with the Gulls breaking through for a run in the bottom of the fourth. Center fielder Tad Gold (Martha’s Vineyard, Mass.) walked and stole second, then was delivered home by an RBI single to right field by first baseman Colin Sitarz (W. Hartford, Conn.), who was celebrating his birthday on Saturday.

Brandeis, who outhit the Gulls 8-6 in the game, got their lone run in the seventh inning, loading the bases with three hits and then tying the game on an RBI line-out by shortstop Brian Allen (Salem, N.H.). Second baseman Tom McCarthy, who had a 3-3 day for the Judges, came in to score on the play.

Endicott’s arms dueled against Brandeis sophomore Brian Ing (Sandwich, Mass.), who pitched seven innings of five-hit ball and left with the game knotted at one, earning the no-decision.

Dylan Britton (Poughquag, N.Y.) took the loss, falling to 1-2 after pitching the eighth and allowing the one unearned run.
For the Gulls, starter Steven Carter (Brunswick, Maine) and pitchers Brendan Pittsley (Plympton, Mass.) and Benjamin Petrides (Belchertown, Mass.) combined for the first six innings, allowing just four hits and no runs.

Tomorrow the Gulls will return to Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) action, where they have a record of 9-3. Endicott will travel to
Milton, Mass. for a doubleheader against Curry College, with first pitch set for 12:00 pm.

Brandeis falls to 7-29 for the season, with a 1-7 mark in the University Athletic Association (UAA). The Judges will return home to meet Bowdoin College on Wednesday in a single game beginning at 4:00 pm.
