NORTON, Mass. -- The Endicott Gulls baseball team notched an impressive win on Tuesday afternoon, beating the Wheaton Lyons, ranked \#5 in the country, by a 5-3 score. The win was the ninth straight for the Gulls and it stopped the Lyon's own win streak at 10 games. It also gave Endicott some revenge after the Lyons beat the Gulls in a 14-inning thriller in Endicott's home opener.
Designated hitter Eric Lemke (Southington, Conn.) had two hits and drove in a run for Endicott, who improve to 20-13, winning 20 games for their fourth consecutive season. The Lyons fall to 30-5 on the year.
Endicott got two runs in the fifth to take away a 1-0 Wheaton lead and held the advantage for the rest of the game. Left fielder Ralph Fidaleo (Fairfield, Conn.) homered to left field and Lemke doubled home catcher Nick Roberts (Lynnfield, Mass.) to erase a 1-0 deficit, obtained by the Lyons on a third-inning sacrifice fly by shortstop Eric Jensen (Gorham, N.H.).
The Gulls, who had ten hits to match Wheaton's 10 base-knocks, added to their lead with single runs in each of the next three innings. Outfielder Michael Russo (Natick, Mass.) added a double to bring in E.J. Martinez (Brooklyn, N.Y.) in the sixth and Tad Gold (Martha's Vineyard, Mass.) and Danny Mello (Peabody, Mass.) each had sacrifice flies to plate runs. Roberts crossed the plate for the second time on the day on Gold's fly to left in the seventh.
Dan Demeo (Glastonbury, Conn.) had an RBI groundout to score designated hitter Tyler Contillo (Montville, Conn.), who had three hits on the day as the Lyons grabbed a run back. Wheaton got another run in the bottom of the ninth on an RBI single from left fielder John Keating (Duxbury, Mass.), who hit safely twice in the game.
Endicott starter Tyler Hill (Plymouth, N.H.) improved to 1-1, giving Endicott six strong innings, allowing just one earned run on six hits.
Corey Laliberte (Fall River, Mass.) fell to 2-2, allowing three runs on six hits over five and two-thirds innings.
The Gulls will return to Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) action tomorrow when they play the makeup of a doubleheader at Curry College. Endicott, who has a 9-3 conference record, will be set for a 2:00 pm first pitch in Milton.
Wheaton will travel to Eastern Connecticut State on Thursday for a 6:00 pm non-conference game.
