MILTON, Mass. – Endicott extended their winning streak to 10 games but then saw it come to a close, settling for a split of a doubleheader with Curry College in Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) baseball action on Wednesday afternoon.
Endicott hit three home runs in the first game en route to a 9-7 extra innings victory, but failed to get their bats going in the nightcap, falling 10-2 to see their record go to 21-14 (10-4 CCC).
The Colonels record now sits at 14-20, and they stayed level with the Gulls at a 10-4 mark in conference play.
Game 1
Shortstop E.J. Martinez (Brooklyn, N.Y.) smacked a two-run homer in the top of the eighth inning to give Endicott the lead after the Colonels had overcome a four-run deficit to tie the game at 6 and force extra innings.
Ralph Fidaleo (Fairfield, Conn.) homered twice in the game for Endicott, giving him three home runs in the last two days. Center fielder Tad Gold (Martha’s Vineyard, Mass.) was on base three times, scoring twice, including a steal of home in the fifth inning.
That was the second steal of home plate in the game, as right fielder Curry right fielder Sam Barron (Florence, Mass.) swiped the plate in the bottom of the first. Barron provided an RBI single in that inning and also drove in a run with a double to left field in the eighth.
The Colonels got four runs in the fifth inning to tie the game but Martinez’s two-run shot and an RBI fielder’s choice by Danny Mello (Peabody, Mass.) in the top of the eighth restored a three-run cushion for the Gulls.
Gold had also singled home Mello in the first inning and Harry Oringer (Dartmouth, Mass.), who scored on Martinez’s blast, drove home two more runs in the first frame with a single to left field.
John Morrison (Ridgefield, Conn.) got the win for Endicott, improving to 1-0 after pitching the final three innings and allowing just one run on one hit.
Starter Matt Drew (4-2) (Waltham, Mass.) took the loss for the Colonels, letting up eight runs and issuing four walks.
Game 2
The Colonels jumped out to an early lead in game two with five runs in the first inning, four of them before more than an out had been recorded.
Endicott starter Brendan Pittsley (Plympton, Mass.) was touched up for four runs on four hits in just one-third of an inning.
Junior outfielder Sam Barron (Florence, Mass.) had a 3-4 showing at the plate, driving in two runs and scoring two himself for the Colonels. First baseman Matt Drew (Waltham, Mass.) also had three hits and was one of four Curry players to cross the plate twice.
First baseman Colin Sitarz (W. Hartford, Conn.) delivered a two-run hit in the top of the seventh for the Gulls, who were outhit 13-6 in the game.
Alex Sammons (Irvine, Calif.) pitched a gem for the Colonels, going the full seven innings and allowing just two unearned runs while striking out seven batters.
Endicott is back in action tomorrow afternoon when they travel to Westfield for a 4:00 pm game against Westfield State. The Gulls then finish their regular season with home doubleheaders on Saturday (Salve Regina) and Sunday (UMass Boston).
The Colonels will stay home tomorrow to play a 3:30 pm non-conference game with Framingham State.
