No. 2/3 Baseball Falls To LaGrange, 7-4
LAGRANGE, Ga. — The No. 2/3 nationally ranked Endicott baseball team dropped Sunday afternoon's contest at LaGrange, 7-4, in the weekend finale from Williamson Stadium.
WP (2-0): Beau Collier (Labelle, Fla.) — 5 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 3 BB, 4 K
LP (0-1): Matt Pappalardo (Pelham, N.H.) — 2+ IP, 3 H, 3 R, 2 ER, 0 BB, 2 K
SV (1): Eli Folds (Cullman, Ala.) — 2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 2 K
After leaving a man stranded in scoring position through each of the first two innings, the Gulls broke through in the third after James Benestad (Northborough, Mass.) rounded the bases following his leadoff walk, a couple of wild pitches, and a failed pickoff attempt miscue from the Panthers.
However, the Panthers responded with a five-spot in the bottom of the third, chasing starter Matt Pappalardo (Pelham, N.H.) from the contest in the process. Jake Harmony (Fairfield, Mass.) appeared out of the bullpen in relief, and was able to limit the damage, escaping from a bases loaded jam.
The score remained 5-1 in favor of the Panthers until the seventh inning, when the hosts tacked on another.
In the top of the eighth, the Gulls' bats came to life. AJ Hamm (Shrewsbury, Mass.) and Kyle Grabowski (Westfield, Mass.) each reached base to kick off the rally before TJ Liponis (Scarborough, Maine) singled to left, which scored Hamm from second.
Then, the biggest knock of the day came off of Brady Paradis' (North Attleboro, Mass.) bat when he doubled to left, chasing home Grabowski and Liponis to make it a two-run (6-4) game.
A couple of batters later, Shea LaFleur (Salem, N.H.) collected his second hit of the day with a bloop into right, advancing Paradis to third.
Unfortunately, the Panthers retired consecutive Gulls hitters to escape the jam, stranding the tying run at first base and holding the score at 6-4.
After LaGrange grabbed another insurance run in the bottom of the eighth, they successfully staved off the top of the Gulls lineup in the top of the ninth despite some loud contact from Brenden Walsh (North Reading, Mass.) and Hamm, which secured a 7-4 final score and the second loss of the season for Endicott.
