No. 18/24 Baseball Thumps UMass Boston, 13-2; Grabowski Sets Career Hits Record
BOSTON, Mass. — The No. 18/24 nationally ranked Endicott baseball team took care of business on the road at UMass Boston, 13-2, in Wednesday evening's non-conference affair at Monan Park.
Kyle Grabowski (Westfield, Mass.) broke the program's career hits record after his second base-knock of the day, which came on a solo homer to left field in the top of the fifth inning to make it 4-1 Gulls at the time.
WP (2-1): Jake Harmony (Fairfield, Conn.) — 2 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 0 K
LP (4-2): Ethan Nowak (Hampton Falls, N.H.) — 5 IP, 5 H, 4 R, 3 ER, 1 BB, 2 K
SV (1): Colby Correia (Fairhaven, Mass.) — 3 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 4 K
After a scoreless first two innings of play, Endicott went up 2-0 in the third thanks to a passed ball that plated TJ Liponis (Scarborough, Maine) and Grabowski's first hit of the day, which was an RBI single that deflected off the Beacons' pitcher.
The Beacons got one back in the bottom of the third, but Jeremy Krendel (Framinham, Mass.) stranded the would-be tying run at second base on his fifth strikeout of the evening.
Endicott added a run in the fourth on an AJ Hamm (Shrewsbury, Mass.) RBI double, and then tacked on another in the fifth with Grabowski's historic solo blast.
The Gulls began to make it a laugher with their five-run sixth inning, which put them ahead 9-1 at the time.
Paul Armstrong (Windham, N.H.) (RBI single), Liponis (two-run double), and Cade Bernardo (Glenmont, N.Y.) (two-run double) all notched RBI base-knocks in the frame.
The Beacons took one run back in the bottom of the sixth, but a scoreless seventh brought the Blue and Green back to the plate in the top of the eighth, where they again piled on some run support.
Brenden Walsh (Reading, Mass.) put the icing on the cake with a grand slam, which made it 13-2 Endicott.
Correia, who replaced Harmony after his two innings of work, slammed the door on the win with a shutdown final three innings of relief to earn his first save on the year.
