No. 13/17 Baseball Tops UMass Boston 17-1 On Senior Day
BEVERLY, Mass. — The No. 13/17 nationally ranked Endicott baseball team defeated UMass Boston, 17-1, in Sunday's regular season finale from North Field.
Prior to the game, the Gulls honored the careers of seniors Evan Scully (Maynard, Mass.), AJ Hamm (Shrewsbury, Mass.), Brady Stuart (Hudson, Mass.), Kyan Bagshaw (Amherst, N.H.), Colton Trisch (Bangor, Maine), Ryan Walton (Boylston, Mass.), TJ Liponis (Scarborough, Maine), and graduate Kyle Grabowski (Westfield, Mass.).
The Gulls also honored manager Jared Stern and student analyst Ben Gillis for all their hard work put in over the last four years.
WP (1-0): Jeremy Krendel (Framingham, Mass.) — 5 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 3 BB, 8 K
LP (0-1): Kyle McLaughlin (Auburn, Mass.) — 2+ IP, 2 H, 4 R, 3 ER, 1 BB, 2 K
After an early homer from the Beacons, the Gulls scored 17 straight to claim the home win.
Hamm evened the score with a sac fly in the bottom of the second before the Gulls rallied for six in the bottom of the third, taking their first lead of the day that they never relinquished.
Paul Armstrong (Windham, N.H.) led off the big inning with a double down the right field line, and later scored on Grabowski's single up the middle.
Then, after a wild fielder's choice rundown sequence that resulted in Cade Bernardo (Glenmont, N.Y.), Grabowski, and Liponis all being safe, Liponis was plated on a wild pitch.
Brenden Walsh (Reading, Mass.) really broke things open in Endicott's next at-bat, as he crushed a three-run moonshot that just kept on carrying out to left, and eventually landed rockside to make it 6-1.
Adam Regan (Braintree, Mass.) kept the fun rolling with a double down the left field line, and after he stole third, he scored on James Benestad's (Portsmouth, R.I.) sac fly, which made it 7-1 Gulls after three full innings.
In the fourth, Bernardo highlighted another two-run frame with his solo shot, and in the fifth, three straight hits from Liponis, Grabowski, and Bernardo resulted in another two runs (11-1 Gulls).
As the lead continued to grow late in the contest, Krendel thrived on the hill in his fourth start of the season. The freshman earned his first career win in his five innings pitched, and fanned a career-high eight hitters along the way (1 ER).
Four shutout relief innings from Colby Correia (Fairhaven, Mass.), Jake Harmony (Fairfield, Conn.), Max Jarvie (Wilton, Conn.), and Trisch secured the eventual 17-1 win for Endicott.
