COLLEGE WORLD SERIES: Scully's Gem Leads No. 9/11 Endicott Past No. 16/18 Adrian, 4-2; Gulls Advance To First-Ever National Championship Series
EASTLAKE, Ohio — The No. 9/11 nationally ranked Endicott baseball team defeated No. 16/18 Adrian, 4-2, in Monday night's College World Series semifinal winner-take-all matchup from Classic Park.
WP (6-4): Evan Scully (Maynard, Mass.) — 8 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 7 K
LP (0-1): Anthony Petrillo (Tampa, Fla.) — 2.2 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 0 K
After its explosion in the ninth inning of game one, the Endicott offense stayed hot into the first inning of game two.
TJ Liponis (Scarborough, Maine) scored the first run of the evening after Brenden Walsh (Reading, Mass.) ripped an RBI single through the left side of the infield.
The Gulls continued to mount pressure, but the Bulldogs kept the runners on base and away from home plate, stranding seven total baserunners over the first four innings.
Finally, the dam broke in the top of the fifth.
Kyle Grabowski (Westfield, Mass.) led off with a walk before Cade Bernardo (Glenmont, N.Y.) singled to short to place the first two runners aboard.
Then, Walsh worked another long plate appearance, and eventually reached via walk to load up the bases.
John Fusco (Naples, Fla.) strolled up to bat with the sacks full, and the Franciscan transfer once again came up clutch.
He stung a two-run single up the middle to make it 3-0 Gulls with still nobody out in the frame.
The Bulldogs evaded any further damage in the inning.
On the bump, Evan Scully (Maynard, Mass.) was untouchable for Endicott.
After allowing a single in the first inning, he retired 17 straight batters between the first and seventh innings.
In the seventh, the Blue and Green tacked on another key insurance run.
With Fusco on third (double, wild pitch) and just one out, AJ Hamm (Shrewsbury, Mass.) was tasked with bringing him in.
On the seventh pitch of the at-bat, the Gulls' second baseman cashed in. He extended the lead with an RBI single up the middle, making it 4-0 Gulls.
As Scully continued to carve up the Bulldogs, Adrian was beginning to run out of out.
When the Bulldogs finally reached base against Scully (bottom of the seventh), head coach Bryan Haley came out for a quick word with his senior starter.
However, he continued to ride with his horse, and that decision paid off big time.
Scully retired the next two batters (fielder's choice, strikeout) to keep Adrian off the board through seven full.
He then sat them down in order in the bottom of the eighth, bringing the Gulls to within three outs of their first-ever NCAA championship appearance.
After a scoreless bottom of the eighth, the Bulldogs came up to bat for one final chance.
Scully returned for the ninth, but after the first batter reached base, Coach Haley came out with the hook.
The veteran right-hander exited to an ovation from both sides, and tipped his cap upon entry to the dugout.
All-American ace Brady Stuart (Hudson, Mass.) entered to close out the win.
He allowed a two-out, two-run shot to breakup the shutout, but the very next batter chopped one over to Hamm at second base.
Hamm handled the chopper and tossed on over to first, sending the Gulls to the national championship series.
