Reid's two goals help seal a shutout for the Gulls
Sept. 3, 2008
BEVERLY, Mass. - Endicott College got two goals from sophomore Joanne Reid (Clarksville, Md.) and eight saves from senior goalie Chelsea DeFeo (York, Maine), as the Gulls shutout visiting Fitchburg State, 4-0, on Wednesday afternoon on North Field. With the win, Endicott improves to 2-1, while Fitchburg falls to 0-1 in its young campaign.
The Gulls were led by Reid's two goals on the afternoon. Freshman Anna Giannoni (Granby, Conn.) and sophomore Amanda Shaw (Bristol, Vt.) also touched the back of the net with goals. Goalkeeper Chelsea DeFeo was able to post her second shutout of the season as she turned away eight shots in the victory.
The first goal of the contest was scored by Giannoni on a beautiful 30-yard pass by senior Michelle Berard (Ashland, Mass.) from the midfield to the box. Giannoni made a move past Fitchburg goalkeeper Taylor Van Ahnen (Seekonk, Mass.) and deposited the ball in the back of the net. Reid would then net the next two goals, both on separate assists from seniors Samantha Bourgeois (Gardner, Mass.) and Jennifer Beech (Devonshire, Bermuda). The final goal of the contest was notched by Amanda Shaw, as the sophomore redirected a shot from reigning TCCC Rookie of the Week Alexandra Parese (Wilton, Conn.). The strike marked the first goal of the season for Shaw.
Fitchburg State had its fair share of offensive opportunities. Both sophomores Torey Van Ahnen (Seekonk, Mass.) and Megan Jacobs (Stoughton, Mass.) were able to get two-of-three shots on goal, accounting for a majority of the Falcons 13 total attempts. Although she allowed four goals, netminder Taylor Van Ahnen was also able to make eight saves including some clutch stops down the stretch to keep the Falcons in the game.
The Gulls return to action on Saturday as they host Plymouth State in non-conference play at 1:00 p.m. Fitchburg State searches for its first win of the season as the Falcons travel to Waterville, Maine to take on Thomas College on Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
