Field hockey upended by Plymouth State in ECAC semifinal

Bridgewater, Mass. – Plymouth State University scored twice in each half to eliminate Endicott in the semifinals of the ECAC Division III New England Field Hockey Tournament on Saturday afternoon at Swenson Field. The Panthers (13-7) advance to the championship game while the Gulls wrap up their season with an 11-9 record.
Third-seeded Plymouth will take on number one seed and tournament host Bridgewater State University in the championship game on Sunday at noon. Bridgewater knocked off fourth-seeded New England College, 4-3, in the other semifinal match.
Plymouth opened the scoring just 32 seconds into the game as sophomore forward Olivia Colborn (Lancaster, NH) scored from the middle of the circle on a deflected shot with the assist going to junior midfielder Lauren Bergeron(New Hampton, NH).
The Panthers doubled their lead to 2-0 in the 26th minute on a Molly Saunders (Center Conway, N.H.) one-timer. Senior forward Kristina Conroy (Wakefield, Mass.) slid a pass to an open Saunders, who one-timed a shot into a wide open net.
Endicott cut the lead in half with just under seven minutes remaining in the first half. Senior forward Lindsey Mills (Arlington, Mass.) made a pass to classmate Joanne Reid(Clarksville, Md.) who ripped a shot from 12 yards out past the Panther keeper.
Plymouth tacked on a pair of insurance goals by freshman forward Jackie Morin (Scarborough, Maine) less than four minutes apart late in the second half to put the game out of reach. The Panthers outshot the Gulls by a margin of 12-2 in the final stanza while holding a 10-2 lead in penalty corners.
Sophomore Hilary Lemelin (Milan, N.H.) turned aside five shots in goal for the Panthers while freshman defender Aisha Rai Thompson (Berlin, N.H.) added a defensive save. Endicott sophomore Taylor Teixeira (Exeter, N.H.) made ten saves in the cage for the Gulls.
Plymouth and Bridgewater will be meeting for the third time this season, with all three games taking place at Swenson Field. The Bears defeated the Panthers, 3-1, in the season finale, and then posted a 2-1 overtime victory in the Little East Conference Tournament semifinals.
