BEVERLY, Mass. – Endicott freshman forward Emily Sawchuck (Cumberland, Maine) scored two goals as the Endicott field hockey team won their first game of the 2011 season after defeating Colby-Sawyer 3-0 at North Field.
Sawchuck started off the scoring in the 7th minute of the game, firing a hard shot to the lower right corner of the net past Chargers goalie Colleen O'Hurley (Weare, N.H.) to put Endicott on the board.
The Gulls took a 1-0 lead into halftime after holding Colby-Sawyer to no shots over the first 35 minutes. O'Hurley was active in net, making seven saves in the first half awhile allowing just the lone goal.
In the second half, however, the Blue and Green tacked on two more goals to make the game out of reach for Colby-Sawyer. At 54:32, junior midfielder Cassie DeSimone (Reading, Mass.) received a pass from Taylor Matties (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.) on a penalty corner attempt and directed a low strike to the left corner of the cage for her first tally for the season.
In the 64th minute, Sawchuck scored on a rebound shot off the goalie's pads after teammate Hannah Thornberg's (Oakland, Maine) initial attempt was saved. Thornberg was credited for an assist on Sawchuck's third goal of the year.
In net for Endicott, junior Taylor Teixeira (Exeter, N.H.) made three saves in earning her first win of the year. Colby-Sawyer's O'Hurley finished with 10 saves with Chargers freshman Hannah Coggins (West Newbury, Mass.) making a stellar individual defensive save.
