September 14, 2011
NORTH DARTMOUTH, Mass. - Two first half goals powered the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's field hockey team past visiting Endicott, 3-1, in a non-conference match at Cressy Field Wednesday evening.
UMass Dartmouth struck early into the first half of play. Less than two minutes into the game, sophomore Kayla Ribsam (Lambertville, N.J.) controlled a loose ball, after a shot from freshman Anna Bohenberger (Falmouth, Mass.), and snuck a shot past Gulls junior goalkeeper Taylor Teixeira (Exeter, N.H.), giving the Corsairs a 1-0 lead. UMD increased their lead to 2-0 with 17:30 remaining in the first half when junior Jenna Miedzionoski (Beverly, Mass.) netted her first goal of the season on a penalty stroke. Endicott had an opportunity to cut into the deficit with a penalty stroke with less than 14 minutes remaining in the first half, but Corsairs sophomore goalie Kelsey Gallo (East Greenwich, R.I.) made a diving save to preserve UMD's two-goal lead.
In the second half, junior Melissa Enright (York Beach, Maine) pulled the Gulls within a goal when she fired a shot into the back of the Corsair net, making it 2-1 with 29:27 remaining. The assist came from classmate Hannah Thornberg (Oakland, Maine). With 14:12 left in the game, junior Erica Allan (Amherst, Mass.) redirected a pass from Ribsam into the Gulls goal, securing the Corsairs 3-1 victory.
UMass Dartmouth out shot Endicott, 16-12. Gallo stopped seven shots for UMD, while Teixeira made six saves for Endicott.
The Corsairs improved to 2-2 with the victory, while the Gulls dropped to 1-4 with the defeat. UMass Dartmouth will return to action when they host Framingham State Friday evening. Endicott will visit the University of New England Saturday.
