Gulls Play for a Cure in 6-1 Victory over Western New England

BEVERLY, Mass. – The Endicott field hockey team hosted Western New England on Saturday afternoon for a conference matchup. Five different Gulls scored today to help soar to a 6-1 victory while senior Emily Sawchuck became the new record leader in all-time career assists. Endicott improves to 13-2 (7-1 CCC) while the Golden Bears fall to 4-10 (1-7 CCC). Today the field hockey team Played for a Cure in their Think Pink game to honor breast cancer awareness month.

Endicott will see the field next on Tuesday night as they travel to CCC rival, the University of New England for a 7:00 p.m. game on the Big Blue Turf. The Golden Bears will take the field next on Tuesday as well as they face off with CCC foe Roger Williams.

The first half was controlled by the Gulls as they outshot Western New England 16-6. The Golden Bears made the Blue and Green nervous in the opening 15 minutes of play as freshman Brittany DeLima (Branchville, N.J.) tallied her seventh goal of the season after controlling a feed from freshman Allison Jackson (Mahopac, N.Y.) and slipping the ball past sophomore goalkeeper Checka Ventura (Lawrence, Mass.).

The lead would not last for long after freshman Olivia Larson (Cheshire, Conn.) came in off the bench and tied up the game after controlling a feed from senior Elizabeth LeClair (Wilton, Maine) and tipped the ball into the right corner.

Four minutes later the Blue and Green took the lead after they earned a penalty stroke in the 25^th minute. Junior Ashleigh Allen (Glastonbury, Conn.) stepped up to the mark and blasted the ball into the back of the net for the 2-1 lead.

The scoring was not over there as the Gulls worked their offensive momentum. At the 32^nd minute mark Sawchuck tallied her 17^th goal of the season after taking a pass from senior Amanda Glynn (Hampton, N.H.) and pushing the ball over the goal line for the two goal advantage. One minute later Glynn recorded her first goal of the season as she made it a 4-1 score heading into halftime after the found the back of the net off a feed from Larson.

The second half was again controlled by the Gulls as they outshot the Golden Bears 10-3 while holding them to just one penalty corner to their five.

11 minutes into the half Sawchuck tallied her second goal of the game after she and senior Mackenzie Hurst (Gilford, Mass.) made a combination play to goal. Hurst controlled the ball off a rebound on a Golden Bear's defender and sent the ball to Sawchuck who was able to find the back of the net for the 5-1 lead.

In the 59^th minute the Blue and Green rallied and scored their final goal of the game. Again, Hurst and Sawchuck made the play to goal where this time Sawchuck was able to find Hurst in front of the cage who slipped the ball past goalkeeper, freshman Renee Rossignol (Topsham, Maine) to secure the 6-1 victory. On the play the assist for Sawchuck marked her 25^th of her career which surpassed former Gulls Ashley Wallace '05. Sawchuck now owns nine of 12 offensive all-time records.

Ventura ended the day with six saves as she improves to 9-2 while her counterparts combined for 11.
