BEVERLY, Mass. – Throughout the month of October, the Endicott field hockey program took part in the Pledge 100 Challenge in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness and Wesley College student-athlete Alexis Howerin (Dover, Del.).
Earlier this year, Alexis, a senior on the Wesley field hockey team, was diagnosed with stage 2 breast cancer. What started as a challenge created by the Atlantic East Conference field hockey programs to raise awareness and show support for Alexis during the month of October, eventually spread throughout the Division III community.
That community was made up of 44 other field hockey programs from 10 conferences who walked, jogged, and ran in support of Alexis.
"We talk a lot about sport being 'bigger than the game' and this was a perfect example of that," said Endicott field hockey head coach Jodi Cipolla "Alexis could be a student-athlete on any one of our programs. To see our conference come together and unite in her honor shows what our field hockey community is really all about. Although the month of October is over, we will continue to be #lexstrong and keep this as a cause that is close to our hearts."
As a program, The Gulls walked a total of 5,566 miles headlined by freshman Jenna Seibold (Reading, Mass.) who totaled 298.8 miles.
Overall, all 44 programs walked, jogged, or ran over 45,000 miles.
