Dengler, Johnson Help No. 8 Field Hockey Roll Past Johnson & Wales, 5-0
PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Seniors Maddy Dengler (Winchester, Mass.) and Lily Johnson (Paxton, Mass.) tallied two goals apiece as the No. 8 Endicott field hockey team cruised to a 5-0 victory over Johnson & Wales in Conference of New England (CNE) action on Saturday afternoon at Scotts-Miracle Gro Athletic Complex.
After a scoreless first quarter in which the Gulls threatened repeatedly, Dengler opened the scoring in the second quarter (21:18) as she collected a loose ball on the doorstep and put it home before Johnson struck a minute and 14 seconds later to quickly make it a 2-0 game in favor of the Blue and Green.
With just one second remaining in the half, Lily Farnham (Andover, Mass.) sent a feed to Tori Swanson (Farmington, Conn.) in the circle who buried a backhanded shot past Wildcats' goalie Sophie Brea (Windham, N.H.) for her team-leading 21st goal of the season.
Dengler notched her second goal of the day in the final minute of the third quarter as she dribbled into the circle and fired a shot past Brea that extended the lead to 4-0. From there, Johnson completed in the scoring at the 52:22 mark as she blasted a shot to the far side of the cage.
Endicott held a dominant 40-13 edge in shots led by nine from senior Reagan Hicks (Barnstable, Mass.), while sophomore goalie Faith Minickene (Madison, Conn.) notched her fifth shutout of the season with 10 saves. Brea added 13 saves for Johson & Wales in the setback.
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
- This marked the second all-time meeting between the two programs with the previous matchup being a 1-0 Endicott victory in 2023.
- Dengler's multi-goal game marked her fifth of the season and 13th of her career, while it was the first of the season for Johnson.
- Swanson has now scored in four consecutive games.
- For Minickene, the 10 saves marked her second-highest tally of the season.
WHAT'S NEXT
No. 8 Endicott (17-1, 7-0 CNE) travels to face New England College on Wednesday at 7 PM. Johnson & Wales (8-8, 3-4 CNE) will return to action for the CNE quarterfinals on Saturday, Nov. 1 against an opponent yet to be determined.
