Endicott Zaps Chargers, 70-61
Feb. 8, 2007
BEVERLY, MA - Endicott College got 19 points and 11 rebounds from Nemanja Marinkovic (Belgrade, Serbia/Second Babtist, Houston, TX), as Endicott slipped past Colby-Sawyer College, 70-61 on Thursday night in Beverly, MA.
The Gulls opened Thursday's contest by building a swift 15-4 advantage. After a Colby-Sawyer timeout, the Chargers responded with a quick 8-0 of their own to pull the score to 15-12. Endicott's Gary Corbett (Danbury, CT/Danbury) literally shot the home team into the break, as the junior forward connected on three consecutive 3-pointers, sending the Gulls into halftime with a 31-27 advantage.
The back-and-forth action continued in the second stanza. Again, Gulls stormed out with an 11-3 run to open the second half, and again, the Chargers fought their way back to pull within one. Endicott got two clutch three-pointers down the stretch from an unlikely source, as Nemanja Marinkovic capped off his double-double with six points from behind the arc.
Once again, it was Endicott's Joey Burgos (Lawrence, MA/Lawrence) who found the perfect way to cap a highlight-reel night. Driving baseline with 3:25 left in regulation, Marinkovic put up a lay-up that bounced high off the rim. Burgos turned his man and leapt from outside the lane and powered home a rim-rattling tip-slam to put Endicott up 64-56. The lead was simply too large for the Chargers, as Endicott held on for the 70-61 win.
Gary Corbett finished with 14 points and three rebounds for Endicott, while Burgos ended the evening with 10 points and 7 rebounds. Four out of the starting five for Colby-Sawyer scored in double digits, led by 14 points and seven rebound from Duncan Szeliga (Newmarket, NH/Newmarket).
With this win, Endicott improves to 11-9 overall and 9-3 in the CCC. The Gulls get right back to work on Saturday as they host CCC foe Nichols College. Game time is slated for 3:00 PM in Beverly, MA.
