Eastern Naz surprises Gulls in TCCC upset

Quincy, Mass. – Eastern Nazarene had four players notch double-figures as the Lions posted an impressive 72-67 win over Endicott in the two teams’ TCCC opener on Saturday afternoon in Quincy, Mass. The win was just ENC’s second victory of the season (2-10), while the Gulls (5-7) saw their two game winning streak come to a screeching halt.
Trailing 38-29, ENC started the second half with a fast 10-2 run, forcing Endicott to call a timeout with their lead reduced to one, 40-39. The intensity level rose as the home crowd felt the momentum swing, and the Gulls clung to a slim two point lead. At the ten minute mark, the Lions still trailed 49-46 as both teams hit the bonus with seven team fouls midway through the second frame.
ENC was able to take the lead on a pair of free throws, a steal, and two layups by Josh Butler (Nantucket, Mass.). Then a layup by CJ Gonzales (Fall River, Mass.) capped an 8-0 Lion run and extended their lead to 59-53 with five minutes remaining.
ENC clung on to the lead with less than a minute to play, 67-65, but Endicott tied the game with two free throws with forty seconds left. Barbosa answered with yet another three to take the lead with ten seconds left and sealed the deal when he sunk two more free throws to win the game, 72-67.
Barbosa scored 15 points and added eight rebounds, and Butler scored 17 in the Lions first conference victory. Endicott’s \#Erik Callo\# (Southington, Conn.) recorded a double-double with 14 points and 12 rebounds. Freshman \#Lance Greene\# (Dorchester, Mass.) had 15 points and two steals in the setback.
ENC won their second straight (2-10, 1-0 TCCC), and will look to win their third on the road when they visit the Wentworth Institute of Technology next Tuesday. Endicott (5-7, 0-1 TCCC), returns home on Tuesday to host Nichols College at 8:00 p.m.
