Schoen Guides Endicott to First Win
March 20, 2006
Josh Schoen's (Phoenix, AZ/Arcadia) three-set win over senior Jeremy Speicher propelled Endicott College to its first victory of the season, 4-3, over Albright College, Monday afternoon in Hilton Head, South Carolina.
The match hinged on Schoen's points at first singles and the freshman came through in a big way. After losing the first set, 6-7 (2-7 tiebreaker), Schoen rebounded to take the next two sets, 6-4, 7-4 (7-4 tiebreaker).
"This was a great win for us," said head coach Mark Herlihy. "It really came down to the wire and Schoen came up big. He got a huge win over a seasoned veteran. It truly was a David and Goliath matchup."
The Gulls (1-2) relied on their strong singles for their other three points. No. 2 Gabriel Moraga (Marlboro, CT/Hebron) won 6-2, 6-3 and No. 6 Mark Maloney (Feeding Hills, MA/Agawam) earned a 6-1, 7-6 (7-2 tiebreaker) victory.
No. 3 singles Scott Teller (Granville, NY/Granville) (4-6, 5-7); No. 4 David Micka (Belchertown, MA/Belchertown) (7-5, 5-7, 2-6); and No. 5 Parker Olen (Falmouth, ME/Falmouth) (3-6, 0-6) lost for Endicott.
Teller and Micka won at second doubles (8-6) for the Gulls, while Schoen/Morega (5-8) and Olen/Nate Buell (Westfield, MA/Westfield) (6-8) lost in double play, which only accounts for one point.
