Sacred Heart drops Gulls, 3-0

BEVERLY, Mass. - Senior Barry Smith (Shelton, Conn.) had 16 kills for visiting Sacred Heart University as the Pioneers swept the Endicott College Gulls 3-0 in a non-conference men's volleyball matchup on Saturday afternoon in Beverly, Mass. The win improves Sacred Heart to 5-2 overall while the Gulls drop back to .500 at 5-5 (4-0 NECVA).
Endicott would trail the entire first game as Sacred Heart would take game one 30-25. The Pioneers continued to control the tempo in the second game as they took down the Gulls 30-27. In the third game, Endicott would take the lead several times but would not be able to put the Pioneers away. The score was tied as late as 21-21 however Sacred Heart would pull away in the end, winning the deciding game 30-28.
The Pioneers were led by Smith's 16 kills as well as Tim Sadowski's (Salem, N.H.) 40 assists. Scott Grandpre (East Greenwich, R.I.) had a team-high 13 digs for the visitor's from Fairfield, Conn.
The Gulls were paced by A.J. Witkofsky (Scotia, N.Y.) who had a game-high 19 kills to go along with 5 blocks. John Emery (Westford, Mass.) chipped in with 13 kills and Dan Coleman (Millis, Mass.) had 16 digs. Ben Foster (Penfield, N.Y.) had a game-high 49 assists for the Gulls.
Endicott returns to action on Tuesday as they host Southern Vermont in a NECVA New England matchup scheduled for 7:00 p.m. Sacred Heart will travel to Hoboken, N.J. to take on Stevens Institute of Technology on Monday at 7:00 p.m.
