May 8, 2009
BEVERLY, Mass. - Coast Guard Academy used a three-run third inning and back-to-back homeruns by Courtney Wolf (Fredericksburg, Md.) and Colleen Denny (Clarence, N.Y.) in the fifth inning to erase a 3-0 deficit and defeat Springfield College, 7-4 on Friday evening on the campus of Endicott College at the NCAA Division III Softball Beverly, Mass. First Round Tournament. The Bears (38-5-1) will move on to face Tufts University tomorrow at 2:00 p.m. while the Pride (21-23) have drawn hosts Endicott College in a game at 12:00 p.m.
Springfield built an early lead right off the bat as the Pride scored three runs in the bottom of the first inning for an early 3-0 lead. The Pride loaded the bases with a pair of singles and a walk and scored their first run on a Bryn Worrilow (North Babylon, N.Y.) sacrifice fly. The Pride added another run on an RBI single by Amanda Novak (Cos Cob, Conn.) while Laura Riccio (Bristol, Conn.) showed patience at the plate and worked a bases-loaded walk to drive in the final run of the inning.
The Bears would get on the board in the top of the third as Annette Boston (Oceanside, Calif.) scored on an error and Wolf drove in her first two runs of the day with an RBI single through the left side. Coast Guard added a single run in the fourth as Jeannie Crump (Roseville, Calif.) had a sacrifice fly to take the 4-3 lead for the Bears.
In the fifth inning, Wolf and Denny did their damage as Wolf sent a rocket over the fence in left field followed by Denny's blast off the rock façade in left centerfield. Coast Guard added one more run in the seventh while the Pride added one in their half of the inning but it would not be enough as the Bears finished off their comeback with a 7-4 victory
Hayley Feindel (River Ridge, La.) picked up her 33rd win of the season by going seven innings, giving up four runs (three earned) and striking out 10 Pride batters. Boston, Crump, Wolf, and Denny each had two hits apiece for the Bears while Wolf drove in three and scored a pair of runs.
Samantha Rhodes (Mendon, Mass.) drops to 13-11 this season by going four innings and giving up six runs on 10 hits. Michelle Wlosek (Nutley, N.J.) led the Pride by going 3-for-4 with a run scored while Novak finished 2-for-4 with two RBI.
Coast Guard will face off against Tufts at 2:00 p.m. while the Pride of Springfield College will play Endicott at 12:00 p.m.
