Softball splits a pair in day one of Florida trip

Kissimmee, Fla. – The Endicott softball team split a pair of games on Sunday and opened the 2011 season with a 1-1 record after day one of the spring training trip to Florida. The Gulls kicked off the season with an 11-3 win over Wisconsin-Platteville before falling to Simpson, 13-5, to wrap up the afternoon.

Wisconsin-Platteville did all of its damage in the first two innings, scoring three runs on seven hits to jump out to an early 3-0 lead. Sophomore Nicole Devlin (Dudley, Mass.) drove in a pair with a two-out double in the bottom of the third inning to even the game at three.
The Gulls tacked on two more in the bottom of the fifth to take the lead for good. Freshman Jennie Lacolla (Stoneham, Mass.) and Devlin each walked before sophomore Jocelyn Russo (Middletown, Conn.) scored them both with a double to left field.

Endicott added six runs on four hits in the bottom of the sixth to take the win. Sophomore Colleen Martin (Cape Elizabeth, Maine) drove in two and scored during the inning before Russo hammered a two-run home run to cap the scoring. Russo finished 2-for-3 from the plate with four RBIs and a run in the win.
Freshman pitcher Nell O’Connor (Harwich, Mass.) picked up the win, going the distance and striking out four in her first collegiate start. After allowing seven hits in the first two innings, O’Connor allowed just one through the final four.

Endicott jumped out to an early 1-0 advantage in the top half of the first inning after Devlin singled to score Russo, who led off the inning with a single to left field. One inning later, Russo drove in sophomore Krista Fales (Melrose, Mass.) to double the lead before senior Hayley Hovhanessian (Farmington, Conn.) drove home Mattie Brett (Waterford, Conn.) to make it 3-0.
Simpson countered with four runs in the bottom half of the inning to take a one-run lead into the third. The Gulls went down in order before the Storm erupted for five runs to seize control of the game and take a 9-3 lead.
Brett opened the top of the fourth with a single to right-center before Russo sacrificed her to second. Alexandra Moise (North Reading, Mass.) doubled down the left field line to score Brett followed by a single to right-center from Hovhanessian which drove home the freshman and closed the gap to four.
Simpson tacked on three runs in the fifth inning to take a 12-5 lead before adding one more in the sixth.
Hovhanessian led the way with a team-high two RBIs while Moise was a perfect 2-for-2 at the plate.
Endicott returns to action tomorrow (March 14) for a double-header against Kean (9:00 am) and Centernary (11:00 am).
