Gulls Fall to Undefeated Wesleyan in OT, 68-64
Jan. 2, 2005
The Endicott Gulls played their best basketball of the season tonight, but fell short of a win, losing to regionally ranked Wesleyan in overtime, 68-64, in West Palm Beach, Florida. The Gulls had four players in double digits as they shot, fought and hustled their way to almost spoiling Wesleyan's undefeated record.
The first half included 9 lead changes and 3 ties. Wesleyan took the biggest lead of the half, 15-8, at 10:10 on a basket by forward Ashley Mastrangelo. But the Gulls, powered by 9 first half points from both forward Holly Beth Wojcik and guard Jodi Brown, kept the game close. With one second left in the half point guard Nora Bowman hit 2 free throws to give the Cardinals a 2-point lead, 28-26, going into the break.
Endicott came out firing in the second half. A 19-8 run in the first 9 minutes gave the Gulls the biggest lead of the game, 45-36. The Cardinals chipped away at the lead however, resulting in 5 lead changes in the second half. With one minute left in regulation, point guard Carly Haynes was fouled while hitting a tough shot driving to the basket. Haynes drained the free throw to put the Gulls up by 2, 57-55. The Gulls held onto the 2-point lead until Cardinal leading scorer, Hannah Stubbs, pounded it inside for 2 to tie the game at 57 with just 2 seconds remaining in the game.
The Cardinals went on a 6-0 run in the first 2 minutes of overtime. Over the next 2 minutes Haynes scored two baskets and a free throw to keep the Gulls close, but Wesleyan held onto the lead for the win, 68-64.
The Gulls shot 41% for the night while holding the Cardinals to 33 percent shooting. Liz Yuneman led all scorers with 18 points, including 7-10 free throws. Wojcik had her best game of the season, scoring 16 points on 50% shooting from the field. Haynes and Brown rounded out the Gulls double-digit scoring with 13 and 12 points respectively. Lisa Chartier led the Gulls in rebounding with 13, but it was Wesleyan who dominated over Endicott overall on the boards.
The Gulls face Emmanuel tomorrow at 2:00pm before heading back to New England. Wesleyan and Emmanuel are two of just seven teams in New England still undefeated. The Gulls trip to Florida will be great preparation for conference play.
