Drugan Lifts Gulls over Scots for 10th Win of Season
Feb. 1, 2005
Freshman Aubrey Drugan nailed two free throws with 6 seconds left in the game to give EC a 1-point lead and lift the Gulls over cross-town rival Gordon tonight, 57-54. Avenging their only loss in the CCC this season, Endicott battled its way through mediocre shooting in the first half and brought it down to the wire late in the second half before winning the game on the foul line.
Things were not looking good early in the first half for the Gulls but a solid effort by the starting five, Liz Yuneman (12 points, 4 assists), Jodi Brown (9 points, 9 rebounds, 3 assists), Holly Beth Wojcik (9 points, 7 rebounds), Lisa Chartier (8 points, 7 rebounds) and Carly Haynes (8 points, 5 steals) kept them close. With only 28% shooting from the field in the first half, the Gulls went into half time trailing the Scots 30-23.
EC went on a 20-13 run in the first 10 minutes of the second half to tie the game at 43. The lead went back and forth from there right down until the last seconds of the game. Going into the last minute, the Gulls led 53-51 until freshman Kristen Helgesen converted a three point play (put back and free throw) with 26 seconds left to give Gordon a one-point lead. With just six seconds left, freshman Aubrey Drugan drove to the hoop and was fouled while going up. She hit both of her free throws giving Endicott the one-point lead and the game winning baskets. In the last 6 seconds, Carly Haynes stole a Gordon pass and Holly Beth Wojcik was fouled in desperation. Wojcik hit both free throws to extend the lead to 3.
In front of a spirited home crowd, the Gulls shot 83% from the free throw line, but only 34% from the field for the game. Kate Harte, Sarah Voigt and Marisa Botta all came off the bench to provide the Gulls with valuable minutes.
Genny McWhorter (15 points, 5 rebounds) and Sarah DeLuca (14 points, 7 rebounds) led the Gordon Scots who drop to 5-4 in conference, 6-11 overall.
EC advances to 8-1 in the CCC and 10-7 overall with their 7 game winning streak in the past three weeks. Endicott travels to Henniker, New Hampshire to take on New England College on Thursday at 5:30 p.m.
