Gulls Victorious in Home Opener
Dec. 3, 2004
The Gulls jumped out to a 10-0 run in the first seven minutes of their home opener and never gave up the lead as Endicott defeated visiting St. Joseph's of Maine, 52-48, last night. The Gulls victory over the Monks was their first since Endicott started playing them in 1997.
Liz Yuneman (10 points and 3 assists on the night) and Holly Beth Wojcik (6 rebounds and 8 points overall) were the sole scorers in the first 7 minutes of the game to give Endicott a 10-0 lead early. Although Endicott's shooting was not hot (30% for the game) their aggressive defense (forcing 24 turnovers in the game and 10 steals by Endicott) held St. Joe's to just 15 points in the first half and a 28-15 lead at the break.
The Monks came out in the second half more aggressively outscoring Endicott 13-6 in the first 5 minutes. However, freshman Aubrey Drugan (14 points and 4 steals overall) kept the Monks at bay. The Gulls proved to be too much for the Monks despite St. Joe's winning the second half 33-24.
Drugan led the way for the Gulls while Carly Haynes (9 points), Yuneman, McKenzie Ferguson (8 points), and Wojcik also played well for Endicott.
Laura Pelkey (13 points, 10 rebounds), Margaret Blauvelt (8 points, 7 rebounds), and Megan Tetrault (9 points and 6 steals) played well for the Monks. The Gulls bring their record to 2-2 and look forward to their next game against conference rival Gordon; Tuesday in Wenham at 6:00pm.
