Gulls Take Down Gordon En-Route to Seventh Straight Win
Jan. 31, 2006
WENHAM, MA - The road to Endicott College's seventh straight win went through Gordon College in a Commonwealth Coast Conference showdown at the Bennett Center Tuesday night.
The Gulls relied on a stifling defense to wear down the Fighting Scots and take a 56-42 victory to stay in the driver's seat in the CCC.
Endicott completed the home-and-away sweep of its rival, moving to 12-6 overall and CCC-best 8-1 in conference play while Gordon fell to 4-13.
Senior guard Liz Yuneman (Middle Village, NY/St. Francis Prep) poured in a game-high 16 points in the win and freshman forward Nicole Young (Rockland, MA/Cardinal Spellman) added 14 points (7-of-14 shooting) with seven rebounds and two blocks.
The Gulls shot 41 percent from the field while limiting Gordon to just 31 percent shooting in the game. Scots' sophomore forward Kristen Helgesen (Manchester, MA) was immense inside, scoring 15 points with six rebounds while sophomore forward Beth Pinkham (Waldoboro, ME) and junior guard Amy Dodd (Vestal, NY) each scored eight points. Dodd pulled down nine boards and had five assists.
The two teams played even in the first 17 minutes of action but the Gulls turned a five-point advantage with three minutes to play in the first half into an 11-point cushion at intermission. During the first, Endicott shot 44 percent from the floor and held Gordon to 21 percent shooting.
Young dropped in 10 points in the first half on 5-of-7 shooting and grabbed three rebounds while senior forward Sarah Voigt (Kingston, NH/Sanborn Regional) dropped in seven of her eight points in the first.
The Gulls opened the second half on a 16-5 run over the first 9:30, taking a 44-22 lead. The Scots would not go away, however, using a 20-6 run to close the gap to 51-42 with just over a minute remaining. But the visitors made the most of their free throw shots to keep the Scots in their rear view mirror.
Sophomore guard Aubrey Drugan (Salem, NH/Bishop Guertin) added eight points, four rebounds, two assists and two steals in the win and senior guard Jodi Brown (Coventry, RI/Coventry) scored four points and made two steals for the Gulls.
Endicott is back at home Thursday to take on New England College at 8:00 PM while Gordon travels to Anna Maria College (6).
