Endicott Drives Past Gordon
Dec. 6, 2005
BEVERLY, MA - Whenever Endicott and Gordon get together in any sport, you can throw out the records and the stats. And Tuesday's women's basketball game between the two was no exception.
It was a typical rival game where the last one standing would be declared the winner.
The Gulls absorbed every punch the Scots threw and came away with a 58-54 victory in a hard-fought Commonwealth Coast Conference game at MacDonald Gymnasium.
With Endicott clinging to a two-point lead with 16.7 seconds remaining in regulation, senior guard Liz Yuneman (Middle Villiage, NY/St. Francis Prep) hit a layup as the shot clock expired, doubling the lead. Yuneman had 10 points, six boards and two steals for the night.
Gordon struck back with 6.4 seconds left on a Beth Pinkham (Waldoboro, ME) bucket in the post to make the score 56-54. However, senior guard Jodi Brown (Coventry, RI/Coventry) sealed the game with two free throws with 4.4 remaining.
The contest featured 39 turnovers and saw Gordon shoot 3-of-20 in the first half. Despite committing 27 turnovers of their own, the visitors hung around all night, trailing 25-15 at the break. Amy Dodd (Vestal, NY) led all scorers with 16 points to go along with 12 rebounds, a block and a steal. Kristen Helgesen (Manchester, MA) added 11 points (13 rebounds, block, steal) and Pinkham chipped in 10 points and five boards for Gordon.
Endicott was able to build the halftime cushion thanks to the sharp-shooting of Aubrey Drugan (Salem, NH/Bishop Guertin), who had 10 points in the first half on 4-of-6 shooting. The sophomore finished with 13.
Paris Sanders (Needham, MA/Minuteman Tech) established herself inside with nine points and three blocks to go along with six boards in 21 minutes and senior Sarah Voigt (Kingston, NH/Sanborn Regional) added seven points and grabbed seven rebounds.
Endicott hosts Bridgewater Thursday night (8) while Gordon visits Salem State Saturday.
