Gulls Hold Off Nor'easters

Biddeford, ME - Nicole Duchesne (Plaistow, NH/Central Catholic) scored 18 points leading the Gulls from a seven-point halftime deficit to defeat the University of New England 63-56, in Commonwealth Coast Conference action Tuesday in Biddeford, ME.
The win gives EC a perfect 4-0 record in the CCC and improves their overall mark to 7-5. UNE stands at 4-8 overall, 2-3 in conference action.
The Nor'easters opened the game shooting 59.1 percent, 13 of 22 from the floor, in the first half to open up a 35-28 lead. Brooke Weston (Dixfield, Maine) tallied a season-high 12 points in the opening 20 minutes to help UNE overcome 14 turnovers and take a seven point half time lead.
Duchesne scored 14 points on 6-of-8 shooting to help keep Endicott within striking distance. EC used a 13-5 run over the opening 6:02 of the second half to take just its second lead in the contest. Aubrey Drugan (Salem, NH/Bishop Guertin) was instrumental in the surge, scoring eight of her team's points and drilling a three-pointer to cap the run.
The lead would change hands 13 times over the ensuing 11 minutes before the Gulls took the lead for good on a conventional three-point play from Kate Harte (Warner, NH/Kearsarge Regional) with just over three minutes left.
UNE would get no closer than three the rest of the way, and Paris Sanders (Needham, MA/Minuteman Tech) pulled in some clutch rebounds and hit four free throws to help preserve the victory.
Duchense finished 8-for-13 shooting and had five steals in 37 minutes. Drugan added 14 points and picked up four of Endicott's 14 steals.
Katie Diggins '10 (Merrimack, NH) scored a career-high 18 points on 8-for-11 shooting in just her second game at UNE, while Sara Pelkey (Barre, VT) added 11 points, seven rebounds and three steals.
UNE shot 46.8 percent (22 of 47) for the game but was hampered by 27 turnovers. The Nor'easters travel to Henniker, NH on Thursday for a 5:30 p.m. game with New England College. The Gulls return to the hardwood Saturday at defending league champion Colby-Sawyer College (1:00 p.m.).
