Feb. 13, 2007
BEVERLY, MA - The Endicott College women's basketball team cruised to a 64-49 win over rival Gordon College on Thursday night in Beverly, MA.
Sara Doherty (Somerville, MA/Arlington Catholic) got the Gulls going early on as she took a nice feed from Nicole Young (Rockland, MA/Cardinal Spellman) low in the paint, dropping in a tough two to put Endicott up 7-4. The Gulls would double their lead moments later, as Carly Haynes (Laconia, NH/Laconia) stole a Meredith Phipps (Sandy, UT/Waterford) inbounds pass and sunk the uncontested lay-up, advancing the home teams lead to six.
The Gulls kept the offensive pressure on as Kaylin Burke (Leominster, MA/Leominster) and Rachel Hewes (Nashua, NH/Nashua South) knocked down a deep three-ball and a 15-footer respectively, putting EC up 19-10. Amy Dodd (Vestal, NY/Broome C.C.) did her best to keep the visitors in the ballgame, as the senior guard hit back-to-back three's to pull the Fighting Scots within four with 2:15 remaining in the opening half.
With time winding down in the first frame, Endicott's Ceciley Chisholm (Lexington, MA/Lexington) hit both of her free-throw attempts, followed by a Paris Sanders (Needham, MA/Minuteman Tech) pull-up jumper to send Endicott into the half with a 30-20 advantage.
Endicott retook the court and picked up where they left off, as Nicole Duchesne (Plaistow, NH/Central Catholic) buried a three-pointer, pushing the Endicott lead to 14 with 14:40 remaining in the second half. The Gulls would lead by as many as 19 points on Tuesday night, capped off by a Jenna Cosgrove (Sharon, MA/Sharon) three with just over 2:00 minutes to play, as Endicott cruised to an easy 64-49 victory.
The Gulls were led by Nicole Duchesne's 16 points and four assists on the evening. Endicott also got a strong effort from Paris Sanders, who dropped in six points, six blocks and grabbed nine rebounds in the win. Gordon College put three players into double-figures as Amy Dodd had a game-high 18 points on 6-of-16 shooting from the field. The Fighting Scots' Abigail Ytzen (Des Moines, IA/Des Moines Christian) and Meredith Phipps each had 11 points in the loss.
With the win, Endicott improves to 15-7 and 12-2 in the Commonwealth Coast Conference. Next up for the Gulls is a road game Thursday night at New England College. Endicott took the first meeting of the season from the Pilgrims, 65-45. Thursday night's game tips at 5:30 PM in Henniker, NH.
