Medaille rallies past Falcons, 53-52

BEVERLY, Mass. – Medaille College rallied from a 10-point deficit in the final nine minutes of play to edge Fitchburg State College, 53-52, at the Endicott Tip-Off Classic hosted by Endicott College on Friday night. Medaille’s Meghan Dougherty (Buffalo, N.Y.) converted on a layup and the following free throw with :23 seconds remaining to cap a 19-8 run and give the Mavericks the come from behind win. Medaille improves to 2-0 this season while the Falcons drop to 1-1.
The first half of play was fairly sloppy as each side committed 11 turnovers while both teams shot less than 30% from the field. Fitchburg entered the half with a slight two point lead as the Falcons received seven point a-piece from Rebecca Goreham (Quincy, Mass.) and Kim Duprey (Bernardston, Mass.). The Mavericks’ Kacie Mills (Buffalo, N.Y.) led Medaille with seven points of her own while Nikki Meehan (Rexville, N.Y.) came off the bench to score six points in five minutes of action.
Coming out of the break, Medaille knotted the game up, 26-26, at the 18:51 mark on a Mills jumper. The Falcons answered with a 9-0 run as Goreham connected on a three to make it a 35-26 ballgame. Medaille would cut the lead to four on a pair of Susanne Black (Houghton, N.Y.) free throws before the FSC lead was stretched to 10 points with 8:45 remaining in regulation.
Dougherty began the comeback for the Mavericks as she scored 10 points, including a pair of threes, for Medaille in a three minute span, making it a four point game with 5:38 to play. Following a Falcons score, Dougherty found an open Amanda Sahhar (Orchard Park, N.Y.) for a short jumper to get it back to a four point game. Tiffany Sullivan (Penfield, N.Y.) scored layups on consecutive fast-break plays to knot the score at 50 before Fitchburg’s Melissa Proffitt (Hubbardston, Mass.) gave the Falcons a 52-50 lead with her jumper in the paint.
Medaille had two opportunities to take the lead with open threes but could not convert. On the Falcons side, a missed Kim Duprey three allowed the Mavericks to get out on the fast break where Dougherty was fouled going up for a layup and the ball fell through leaving the tie scored 52-all.
