Gulls cruise past Falcons, 57-41

BEVERLY, Mass. – \#Ashley Wright\# (Merrimack, N.H.) scored a game-high 21 points and added five steals as Endicott College downed Fitchburg State College, 57-41, on the final day of the Endicott Tip-Off Classic on Sunday afternoon in Beverly, Mass. The Gulls improve to 2-0 this season while the Falcons drop to 1-2, suffering both defeats in the Classic.
Endicott never trailed in the contest, building a six point lead on a Wright layup at the 13:20 mark of the first half. The Falcons fought back to within one as a Rebecca Goreham (Quincy, Mass.) layup made it 16-15 with just under 10 minutes to play. The Gulls responded with a 12-2 run in the final eight minutes to end the half, taking a 28-17 lead into the break.
Endicott scored 10 points off 11 Fitchburg turnovers and scored six points on the fast break. Fitchburg’s Melissa Proffitt (Hubbardston, Mass.) led all scorers at the half with eight points while Wright and \#Kaylin Burke\# (Leominster, Mass.) led the Gulls with seven points apiece.
In the second half, the Falcons cut the lead to single digits within the first two minutes of play as a jumper by Kari Averill (Barre, Vt.) made it a 28-21 game at the 18:49 mark. The Gulls responded with a 13-2 run to stretch their lead back up to 18 as Ashley Wright went coast-to-coast on a steal for a 41-23 lead. Endicott would go ahead by as many as 21 with 8:30 to play in regulation before the Falcons went on a 12-2 run of their own to make it an 11-point game with just over four minutes to play. However, the Falcons would not score the rest of the game as Endicott regained their composure and held on for a 57-41 victory.
For the game, Endicott scored 17 points off 23 Fitchburg State turnovers. The Gulls also held the edge in bench points (8-2) and fast break points (8-0). Both teams struggled from the field as Fitchburg shot 26.6% (17-of-64) compared to 32.8% (19-of-58) for the Gulls.
Wright led all scorers with her 21 points and had a game high five steals. \#Ceciley Chisholm\# (Lexington, Mass.) chipped in with 10 points and six rebounds while \#Ashley Vitale\# (Wilmington, Mass.) had nine points and seven rebounds. \#Brittany Kelleher\# (Wakefield, Mass.) came off the bench to add six points and nine rebounds.
The Falcons were led by a double-double from Goreham who posted 11 points and a game-high 15 rebounds. Melissa Proffitt added 12 points, seven rebounds, two steals and two blocks while Kelley Rogers (Lowell, Mass.) contributed six points and seven rebounds.
The Blue and Green return to action on Tuesday night as the Gulls host Tufts University at 6:00 p.m. in the MacDonald Gymnasium. Fitchburg State travels to UMass-Boston on Tuesday for a tip-off at 5:30 p.m.
