Jumbos hold off Gulls, 75-64

BEVERLY, Mass. – All five Tufts University starters finished in double-figures as the Jumbos topped previously unbeaten Endicott, 75-64, in non-conference women’s basketball action on Tuesday evening in Beverly, Mass. Tufts’ Julia Baily (Farmington, Conn.) finished the night with 20 points and 15 rebounds for her third-straight double-double.
Endicott opened the game with back-to-back layups by \#Ashley Vitale\# (Wilmington, Mass.) and \#Ceciley Chisholm\# (Lexington, Mass.) to jump out to a 4-0 lead. Tufts, however, responded by rattling off a 20-6 run that included seven points by junior guard Vanessa Miller (Cincinnati, Ohio). The visitors would push their lead to as many as 23 points in the opening half, cruising into the intermission with a 36-17 advantage.
It took Endicott just six minutes in the second half to accumulate its entire first half scoring, as the Gulls chipped the Tufts’ lead down to nine with a 13-0 run. The lead would stay at nine until the 12:32 mark, and that’s when the Jumbos began to heat up from behind the arc. Colleen Hart (Needham, Mass.) knocked down a 3-ball, followed a Tiffany Kornegay (Carver, Mass.) trey to put the guests up 15. Tufts then struck again as Hart dialed in from deep followed by a 3-pointer from Vanessa Miller, blowing the game wide open at 59-40.
Trailing by 17 with five minutes remaining, Endicott hung around for the remainder of the contest as \#Ceciley Chisholm\# scored five points in a 1:30 span, cutting the lead to 12. A 3-ball by \#Kaylin Burke\# (Leominster, Mass.) made it a nine point game before Vanessa Miller put the game out of reach with consecutive late free throws.
Julia Baily finished with 20 points and 15 boards while Tiffany Kornegay notched a double-double with 12 points and 12 rebounds. Kate Barnosky (Huntington Station, N.Y.) had 14 points and seven rebounds while Vanessa Miller notched 12 points.
Endicott’s \#Ceciley Chisholm\# finished with a game-high 23 points, 21 of which came in the second half. \#Ashley Vitale\# had 14 points to go along with 10 rebounds. Junior \#Ashley Wright\# (Merrimack, N.H.) scored 15 points and added two steals. The Gulls, who shot 50% on the night, were an impressive 22-of-30 from the field in the second half (73.3%).
Tufts (2-1) returns to action on November 29th as the Jumbos take on the Judges of Brandeis University at 1:00 p.m. Endicott looks to rebound on December 2nd when the Gulls play the final game of their four-game home stand against Suffolk University at 7:00 p.m.
