Gulls Roll Past MIT, 19-10

CAMBRIDGE, MA - Eight consecutive goals to start the second half led Endicott College to a 19-10 non-conference road win over MIT on Thursday night in Cambridge, MA. The Gulls got a four-goal effort from Shiori Tachiwana (Kanagawa, Japan) as the Blue and Green move to 2-0 on the young season.
Emily Judd (Peabody, MA/Peabody) opened the scoring for Endicott just 2:27 into the first half. Exactly one minute later, MIT evened the contest with a free position shot by Lily He (Ponte Vedre, FL/Nease). The Gulls responded with four unanswered goals during the next nine minutes, with Valerie Feldman (Albany, NY/Guilderland) recording the first and last goals the of Gulls run. MIT's Casey Flynn (Silver Spring, MD/Georgetown Visitation) ended the spurt with an unassisted tally and was followed by a free position strike from Samantha O'Keefe (Carlisle, MA/Concord Carlisle), narrowing the Gulls lead to 5-3. Endicott answered back by extending their lead to 8-3 on tallies by Tachiwana, Alex Pearce (Underhill, VT/Kimball Union Academy), and Rebecca Bushnell (Guilford, CT/Guilford HS). The Engineers closed out the half with free position goals by He and O'Keefe, sending the home team into the intermission trailing by three.
Less than two minutes into the second stanza, Feldman set up Sara Gunter (Kennebunk, ME/Kennebunk) for a goal that would spark the pivotal run for the Gulls. Tachiwana registered three goals, while Rebecca Bushnell, Gunter, Feldman, and Samantha Morin (Kennebunk, ME/Kennebunk) each scored once during the nine-minute spree. MIT's Julia Roberts (Rockville, MD/Barrie School) ended a 15-minute scoring drought with a free position shot at the 18:36 mark. Judd raised the Gulls' margin to 17-6 exactly six minutes later before Lynne Tye (Ithaca, NY/Ithaca) posted an unassisted tally for the Engineers. Back-to-back goals by Kristen Micho (Syracuse, NY/Westhill HS) and Bushnell with less than eight minutes to play extended Endicott's lead to 19-7. The Engineers continued to attack as Flynn registered their sixth free position goal of the night and added an unassisted goal. Amanda Hunter (Cornwall, CT/Choate Rosemary Hall) capped the scoring with 17 seconds left to set up the final score of 19-10.
Offensivley, Endicott was paced by Tachiwana's four goals, while Gunter, Feldman and Bushnell each tallied three for the Gulls. Alex Pearce led the way with five groundballs while Judd and Gunter each collected three draw controls. Hannah Pelletier (Kennebunk, ME/Kennebunk) notched two caused turnovers and Erin Curry (Hampstead, NH/Gould Academy) registered 12 saves in goal for her second win of the season.
With the win, Endicott improves to 2-0 while MIT falls to 0-1. The Gulls get back to work a week from today (March 22nd), as they play host to Wesleyan University at 4:00 PM in Beverly, MA.
