Polar Bears send Gulls to second straight loss
March 18, 2009
BRUNSWICK, Maine - The Endicott College women's lacrosse team could not overcome and early deficit as the Gulls fell to Bowdoin College in a non-conference matchup on Wednesday night in Brunswick, Maine. Endicott drops to .500 at 2-2 this season while the Polar Bears improve to 3-2.
The Polar Bears jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the first eight minutes and extended their advantage to 5-1 later in the period as five different players found the back of the net. Endicott used a 3-1 run in the final four minutes of the period and cut the gap to 6-4 on a free position goal from Rebecca Bushnell (Guilford, Conn.) with nine seconds remaining.
Bowdoin got two quick goals from Katy Dissinger and Ingrid Oelschlager immediately after intermission, but Endicott answered with a 3-1 surge that trimmed the Bowdoin lead to 9-7 with 17:01 left. Later in the period, Endicott had a chance to cut the lead to a single goal, but Alex Pearce's (Underhill, Vt.) low shot was saved by Steph Collins-Finn which started a Bowdoin break downfield. Moments later, Dissinger netted a free position score that pushed the lead back to three goals with 10 minutes to play.
Pearce led all scorers with four goals for Endicott while Valerie Feldman (Albany, N.Y.) scored twice. Molly Hamel (North Yarmouth, Maine) made eight saves in goal for the Gulls. Bowdoin was led by three goals from Dissinger, who also had three groundballs. Liz Clegg, Katie Stewart and Oelschlager had two scores apiece. Clegg also had six draw controls for the Polar Bears, who held a 10-1 edge in draws in the second period.
Endicott returns to action on Saturday as it opens up TCCC play with a 12:00 p.m. face-off against New England College.
