Women's Tennis edges rival Gordon, 5-4, to remain undefeated
Sept. 25, 2003
In its toughest test of the 2003 season, the women's tennis team topped CCC foe Gordon College earlier today in a tight 5-4 match. The win improves the team's record to 5-0.
The Gulls won 3rd-6th singles and clinched the match when senior co-captains Melissa Marrone and Julie Castle won their 3rd doubles match 8-2. Wins in two three-set singles matches, however, might have been the difference. At 3rd singles, Lauren Gibbons dropped the first set 1-6, before storming back to win the next two 6-1, 6-0. Playing 4th singles, Tessy Garcia lost the first set in a tie-breaker, but came back to win the second set, 6-0, and the third, 6-4. Sofia Pagano impressed with a 6-1, 6-0 win at 5th singles, while Castle prevailed 7-6, 6-3 at 6th singles.
"I think winning 3rd-6th singles against a quality opponent like Gordon revealed the kind of depth we have," said coach Mark Herlihy. "Both Blythe Langley and Melissa Marrone played well despite losing their matches at 1st and 2nd singles, but further down the line-up we were stronger." The team hosts Salem State on Friday, September 26 (3:30 start) in its next match.
