Gale Bacon Appointed Head Coach
July 27, 2004
Gale Bacon of Hamilton, MA has been appointed the new head coach of women's tennis. Gale joins Endicott after an assistant coaching stint at Salem State College. She is also currently the head coach of girls tennis at Hamilton Wenham Regional High School and will maintain those duties because the Endicott women play in the fall while the high school girls play in the spring. Aside from high school and college coaching, Bacon is active as a certified teaching pro by the United States Professional Tennis Association and was the assistant to Avis Murray, formerly of the Manchester Athletic Club. She plays regularly in club tournaments as a member of the Essex County Club.
Bacon inherits a quality program from former coach Mark Herlihy, who stepped down from the women's job for family reasons, but will stay on as a faculty member and the men's tennis coach. Over the last three seasons, the Endicott women have established a winning percentage of .700 and have finished second in the Commonwealth Coast Conference twice. Losing only one player to graduation points to continued success for the program.
Athletic Director, Larry Hiser, commented that "Endicott is lucky to find a coach as qualified as Gale Bacon. She's got a solid coaching background and is well-prepared to work with young people. We also like her competitive fire and look forward to her leadership on our courts."
