Endicott swings past Rhode Island College, 8-1

BEVERLY, Mass. - The Endicott College women's tennis team kept its perfect season alive as the Gulls swung past Rhode Island College, 8-1, in a non-conference match on Thursday afternoon in Beverly, Massachusetts. The win improves the Gulls to 9-0 overall (6-0 TCCC) while the Anchorwomen slip to 5-3 (3-0 LEC).
The visitors were quick out of the gate as doubles team Meg Funk (Oakdale, Conn.) and Julie Bannon (Narragansett, R.I.) defeated the previously unbeaten duo of Nicole Breting (Johnston, R.I.) and Lori Wardner (Wrentham, Mass.), 8-2. Endicott rebounded as Kate Cioffi (Essex, Vt.) and Alyson Boehm (Lowell, Mass.) took down Brittany LaBarre (Greensville, R.I.) and Gabriela Batek (Greensville, R.I.), 8-2. Kate Fiske (Westerly, R.I.) and teammate Jenna Carme (Greenfield, Mass.) gave the Gulls a 2-1 lead as they posted an 8-3 win over Kim Field (Barrington, R.I.) and Melissa Benoit (Cumberland, R.I.).
In singles play Endicott was able to put the match out of reach. Cioffi eased past Meg Funk in the No. 1 spot, posting scores of 6-1, 6-1. Breting edged LaBarre, 7-6, 6-1, and Wardner beat Julie Bannon, 7-5, 6-4. Alyson Boehm continued her strong play with a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Kim Field while Fisk downed Batek, 6-3, 6-2. Jenna Carme closed out the match with a dominating 6-0, 6-1 win over Melissa Benoit in the final singles slot.
Endicott looks to keep its impressive winning streak alive on Wednesday afternoon as the Gulls step back into The Commonwealth Coast Conference play with a match against Wentworth. Rhode Island College retakes the court on Saturday as it hosts Bridgewater State College at noon.
