Gulls tame Panthers to open 2009
Box Score
BEVERLY, Mass. – The Endicott women’s tennis team picked up where they left off a year ago, as the defending 2008 TCCC Champions downed Plymouth State University, 7-1, in a non-conference match on the South Campus Courts in Beverly, Mass. The Gulls (1-0) will now look ahead to their conference-opener on Saturday against Anna Maria.
Endicott looked strong in doubles play as \#Kate Cioffi\# (Essex, Vt.) and \#Alyson Boehm\# (Lowell, Mass.) defeated Sarah Burke (Barrington, R.I.) and Laura Donovan (Acton, Mass.), 8-4. \#Nicole Breting\# (Johnston, R.I.) and \#Lori Wardner\# (Wrentham, Mass.) were also winners in doubles play, cruising past Lacey Mailman (Freedom, N.H.) and Megan Cooper (Camarillo, Calif.), 8-2. The Panthers did get on the board, however, in the No. 3 doubles with an 8-4 victory by Karli Kesson (Standish, Maine) and Lydia Smith (Marblehead, Mass.) over sophomore \#Kerri Dunn\# (Middleton, Mass.) and senior \#Rachel Layton\# (Falmouth, Maine).
The No. 1 singles match was cut short after a \#Kate Cioffi\# 7-6 first set win, but the results of that match proved irrelevant as Endicott swept the five other singles games against Plymouth State. \#Nicole Breting\# defeated Laura Donovan, 6-1, 6-0, while Wardner beat Lydia Smith, 6-2, 6-4 in No. 3 singles. \#Alyson Boehm\#, \#Rachel Layton\# and \#Kerri Dunn\# also turned in winning performances to secure the Endicott victory.
The Gulls get back to action on Saturday when they host the Amcats of Anna Maria College at 12:00 p.m. Plymouth State looks to rebound on the same day when the Panthers face-off with the Huskies of the University of Southern Maine.
