Gulls edge Seahawks, advance to TCCC Semifinals

BEVERLY, Mass. – The Endicott College women’s tennis team recovered from an early 2-1 deficit following doubles play to defeat Salve Regina University, 5-2, in The Commonwealth Coast Conference Quarterfinals on Wednesday afternoon in Beverly, Mass. The third-seeded Gulls will travel to Dudley, Mass. next Wednesday to face Nichols College in the TCCC Semifinals at 2:00 p.m.
In doubles play, Salve jumped out to an early lead as the Seahawks’ duo of Erin Phillips (Morristown, N.J.) and Jessica Timpano (Narragansett, R.I.) defeated \#Kate Cioffi\# (Essex, Vt.) and \#Alyson Boehm\# (Lowell, Mass.), 8-6, at No. 1 doubles. The Gulls rebounded at No. 2 doubles as the All-TCCC First-Team combo of \#Nicole Breting\# (Johnston, R.I.) and \#Lori Wardner\# (Wrentham, Mass.) swept Valerie Leso (West Warwick, R.I.) and Erin Henriksen (East Hampton, Conn.), 8-0. The Seahawks would come out on top in No. 3 doubles as Gina DeMaio (East Bridgewater, Mass.) and Elise Jones (Pittsfield, Mass.) downed \#Rachel Layton\# (Falmouth, Maine) and \#Emily Annis\# (Hampton, N.H.), 8-5.
The Gulls turned the tables in singles play as Breting defeated Timpano in straight sets, 6-1, 6-1. At No. 3 singles, \#Lori Wardner\# did not drop a set in a 6-0, 6-0 sweep of Valerie Leso. \#Alyson Boehm\# and \#Emily Annis\# won their singles matches over Erin Henriksen and DeMaio with Boehm downing Henriksen, 6-2, 6-2, and Annis wrapping up the win for the Gulls with a 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 6 singles. \#Kate Cioffi\#’s match against Erin Phillips and \#Kerri Dunn\#’s (Middleton, Mass.) match with Elise Jones were not completed as the Gulls secured the necessary wins to secure the 5-2 victory.
The Gulls improved to 13-3 this season while the Seahawks wrap up their 2009 campaign at 6-7 overall. The Gulls advance in the TCCC Playoffs to face Nichols College on October 21st at 2:00 p.m. The Bison handed the Gulls one of their only three losses this season as Nichols defeated the Blue and Green, 7-2, on September 8th in Dudley, Mass.
