Tennis falls to preseason favorite Nichols

Beverly, Mass. - Preseason favorite Nichols College took five of the six singles matches en route to a 7-2 win over host Endicott College in The Commonwealth Coast Conference women's tennis action. With the win, the Bison improve to 3-0 on the season including 2-0 in TCCC play. Meanwhile, the Gulls fall to 1-1 overall and 0-1 against conference competition.
Nichols, which received six first-place votes in the 2010 preseason poll, got wins from their top five singles players as well as their top two doubles teams to remain unbeaten. \#Ashley Sullivan\# (Concord, N.H.) was Endicott’s lone singles winner, earning a straight set (6-1, 6-4) victory at the number six spot. The sophomore leads the team with a 2-0 record in singles play.
The Bison’s Anna Dyakiv (Amsterdam, N.Y.) won 6-2, 6-3 at number one singles, then teamed with Maria Balabanova (Moscow, Russia) for an 8-1 win at number two doubles.
Chelsey Miller (Salem, Conn.) won 6-0, 6-0 at number four singles, and teamed with Jill McQuiggan (Weymouth, Mass.) for an 8-1 win at number one doubles.
The Gulls also picked up a point from the doubles team of \#Gina Pinciaro\# (Beverly, Mass.) and \#Kristen DiFillippo\# (Lynnfield, Mass.). The duo improved to 2-0 on the season with an 8-3 win at number three doubles.
Last season, the Gulls fell to Nichols by an identical score during the regular season, but responded with a 5-1 win just over one month later in the TCCC semifinals.
The Blue and Green return to action on Thursday when they travel to Plymouth State for a non-conference matchup. The Gulls were 7-1 winners in that matchup last year. Nichols looks to make it four straight against TCCC foe Colby-Sawyer on Saturday, September 11.
