INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – Competing in their
first NCAA Division III Tournament match since the 2009 season, the
Endicott women’s tennis team has learned that they will meet
Commonwealth Conference champion Elizabethtown (Pa.) in First Round
action on Friday, May 11th.
The match will be hosted by defending NCAA Division III champions
Williams, who earned a bye into the Second Round after going 19-2
overall and despite losing the New England Small College Athletic
Conference (NESCAC) Championship 5-3 to Amherst. Should
Endicott win over Elizabethtown, the Gulls will be matched up with
the defending national champions on their home court.
Elizabethtown won their 10th straight match over the
weekend with their 5-3 victory over Lebanon Valley in the
Commonwealth Conference Championship showdown. It was their
third conference title in-a-row. Like the Gulls,
Elizabethtown is looking for their first ever NCAA Tournament
victory on Friday after losing in the First Round in 2008, 2010 and
2011.
Endicott will make just their second NCAA Tournament appearance in
program history with their prior appearance coming in 2009 when the
Gulls went 18-3 on the season with a 5-0 shutout loss to Wellesley
in the NCAAs. In the 2011-12 season, the Gulls are 16-5
overall and won the Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC)
Championship 5-3 over Nichols back on October
22nd.
The Blue and Green are led by six All-CCC winners including First
Team Singles honorees Kate Cioffi and Emilie Cloutier who have
dominated the number one and two flights all season long.
Cloutier and Emily Heacox have been a consistent presence at the
three doubles position with a 12-1 record on the year.
Elizabethtown showcases a deep lineup as their three through six
singles players have gone a combined 60-7 this season.
Doubles has also been a strong suit with two and three double
combining for 32 wins to just two losses. The Blue Jays go
into Friday’s match 17-2 overall.
