Endicott returns to action; stuns Springfield with 5-4 victory

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – After not competing for nine days, the Endicott women’s tennis team returned to the courts for a non-conference match with Springfield and the Gulls saw junior Gina Pinciaro (Beverly, Mass.) pull out a three-set victory over her Pride opponent at the number six singles spot to give Endicott a 5-4 victory on the road.
With the match knotted at three points each, the Blue and Green took the first set in the two, three and six singles matches, the final three remaining contests. Springfield, however, responded by winning the second set in each of those match ups to force third set action to determine the winner.
First, Gulls freshman Amy Heacox (Marion, Mass.) won her third set 6-2 at the \#3 position to claim a 6-1, 6-7, 6-2 victory. Springfield’s Jen Cleary (Nahant, Mass.) then evened the score at 4-4 with a comeback win at the \#2 singles match 0-6, 6-3, 6-4.
With the match in Pinciaro’s hands, the junior won four of the last five points in her third set, \#6 singles battle, to win 6-4, 3-6, 7-5.
Endicott improved to 12-1 on the year and now look forward to their CCC Semifinal match with Roger Williams on Wednesday, October 19th at 2:00 pm at Endicott’s South Campus Courts. The Gulls are the \#2 seed in the tournament while the Hawks are the \#4 seed. Endicott beat Roger Williams in regular season action 6-3 back on September 13th.
Endicott senior Kate Cioffi (Essex, Vt.) won the only other singles match for the Gulls, taking a hard-fought 7-6, 6-2 victory at \#1 singles.
In doubles play, the Blue and Green dropped two out of three matches but saw the duo of sophomore Emilie Cloutier (Lewiston, Maine) and Heacox earn a 8-3 win at \#3 doubles.
