Shinney's Triple-Double, Bracey's Game-Winner Lead Women's Basketball Past UNE, 73-67
BIDDEFORD, Maine — The Endicott women's basketball team erased a 16-point deficit to knock off the University of New England (UNE), 73-67, in Wednesday evening's Conference of New England (CNE) thriller from the Harold Alfond Forum.
Emma Shinney (Wakefield, Mass.) led the Gulls with her third triple-double of the season. She scored 16 points (6-17 FG, 4-8 FT), hauled down 17 rebounds, dished out 11 assists, and swiped four steals in a full 40 minutes of play.
Tenley Wallin (Danbury, Conn.) notched a career-high 20 points on 8-13 shooting from the field and 2-5 shooting from beyond-the-arc. She also picked up four rebounds, three assists, and a steal in the win.
Aleah Bracey (New Bedford, Mass.) erupted in the second half as a crucial part of the crazy comeback. The freshman guard finished with 15 points (6-13 FG, 3-6 3PT) and three boards, while Tricia Wladkowski (Norwood, Mass.) rounded out the double-digit scorers with a 13-point (5-8 FG, 3-4 FT), six-rebound effort from the floor.
The Nor'easters ran out to a strong 21-10 start through the first quarter, and expanded that lead to 13 points heading into halfime (35-22).
Endicott faced some major shooting woes in the first half, and were ultimately held to just 22 points on 8-32 shooting from the floor. Wallin led the Gulls with 13 points (5-8 FG) over the first 20 minutes.
The third quarter was a total reversal for the Blue and Green, as they outscored the Nor'easters 21-15 on 10-16 shooting from the field. A 16-7 run between the 7:52 and 2:46 marks got the Gulls to within four (46-42). Shinney paced the Gulls' offense with eight points along that stretch.
The Nor'easters began the fourth quarter with a 50-43 advantage, but Endicott once again sprung out to an early-quarter 15-7 run, and took its first lead of the game following Bracey's midrange jumper at the 5:11 mark (58-57).
The two teams traded baskets, and a Wallin triple gave the Gulls a lead once more (61-60).
A brief 5-0 run gave the Nor'easters a 65-61 advantage, but a couple of stops, a Shinney layup, and a straightaway three-pointer from Bracey put Endicott back in front, 67-65.
A pair of freebies for the hosts knotted things at 67 apiece.
The next trip down the court, Shinney whirled out of a double team and found Bracey in the corner deep in the shotclock. With a defender closing out, the freshman hoisted up a triple that rained down through the net, sending the Gulls back in front, 70-67, with just 22 seconds remaining.
In the final moments, the Gulls staved off the Nor'easters, and a few trips to the line solidified the wild 73-67 road victory.
